WWE is reportedly trying to bring Hall of Famer 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin out of retirement for a match at WrestleMania 38, which is less than two months away now.

Austin retired from professional wrestling in 2003 following his WrestleMania 19 match with The Rock. Although The Texas Rattlesnake has made it clear over the years that he doesn't plan on wrestling again, there are several reports suggesting that he could make an unlikely return to the ring.

As previously noted, Kevin Owens appears to be the leading candidate to face Austin at WrestleMania 38, which will take place on Apr. 2-3 weekend at AT&T STadium in Arlington, Texas. Owens planted the seeds for a feud during this week's episode of Raw, where he insulted the state of Texas (Austin's home state).

In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer wrote that the Hall of Famer "looks to be coming out of retirement" for a match with Owens. Though Meltzer hasn't received confirmation that Austin is coming back to wrestle, there was "word backstage" that Owens' promo "was directed toward that match happening."

As for why WWE wants Owens to challenge Austin? Meltzer noted that the former Universal Champion "is someone who can work a good match and lose", adding that The Texas Rattlesnake "was always going to be a part of the show in some form."

Steve Austin WrestleMania 38

Owens turned heel several months ago and has found himself involved in the main event scene over on Raw. The 37-year-old recently signed a new three-year contract with WWE, and perhaps his loyalty to the company will lead to a once-in-a-lifetime showdown with Austin.

Owens vs. Austin Would Be A Giant Money Maker

WWE has a lot of tickets to sell for WrestleMania, which will once again be a two-night event. Surely, adding Austin to the match card would greatly increase ticket sales and pay-per-view buys. We'll just have to wait and see what happens, but the idea of Austin returning for at least one more match in his home state only increases the hype for WrestleMania 38.
