Most of the new signing news in wrestling recently has revolved around WWE as Triple H has been frantically undoing the releases made by his father-in-law. AEW hopped aboard the signing train this week though, opening Dynamite with the reveal that Renee Paquette, formerly WWE's Renee Young, is now All Elite.
Missing The Business
Paquette spoke to the Toronto fans to kick off Wednesday's show and interviewed various wrestlers backstage throughout the show. It appears she will occupy a similar role to the one she honed in WWE but has already shot down the idea of sitting back behind the commentary table. Paquette commentated in NXT and on Raw for periods during her eight-year WWE run.
Paquette left WWE more than two years ago, and explained on The Sessions why now was the right time to return to wrestling and sign with AEW (H/T to TJRWrestling for the transcription). “It’s missing being around professional wrestling, it’s missing that TV aspect of doing things,” Paquette explained, also making sure to mention she has appreciated being able to work from home for the past year.
Why AEW?
As for why AEW, and not WWE following their recent announcer reshuffle, Paquette admitted conversations with her husband, and AEW Champion, Jon Moxley had a lot to do with it. “Most of our conversations, were internally between Jon and I, about figuring out... I want to do something, I want to come back.”
“I think a lot of people just thought that I was sort of like done with wrestling to a degree. And maybe they didn’t want to ask me to do something that I didn’t want to do, or they didn’t want to step on Jon’s toes,” Paquette went on to say. As soon as it became clear to AEW that Paquette did want to get back into wrestling, they brought her on board. A big get for that side of things in AEW, and potentially someone WWE was keen to hire back, although that's purely speculation.
