Vengeance Day opened with a historic tag team match which saw Raquel Gonzalez and Dakota Kai win the first-ever women's Dusty Classic.

The Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic has been a staple of NXT for the past half a decade. However, this year marked the first-ever women's version of the tournament. Eight teams were whittled down to two, and those two teams faced off for the right to be named the winners of the women's Dusty Classic at Vengeance Day on Sunday night.

The established duo of Raquel Gonzalez and Dakota Kai against the makeshift yet effective pairing of Ember Moon and Shotzi Blackheart. In a terrific show opener that featured some incredibly heavy hits, it was the duo with the experience that wound up winning the cup. Kai and Gonzalez have also earned themselves a future shot at the Women's Tag Team Titles in the process.

Gonzalez eventually got fed up of the relatively even back and forth in the match and also had a few close calls of her own. If it wasn't for Kai distracting the official after her partner had been hit by Moon's Eclipse, the match would have had a very different outcome. The same goes for later in the match when it looked as if Gonzalez was on the verge of tapping to Moon until Kai intervened.

Gonzalez eliminated the threat of Moon by slamming her onto the ramp and then throwing her off the side of it. After that all Gonzalez and Kai had to do was finish off Blackheart. Despite Blackheart's best efforts, she succumbed to the numbers game. Gonzalez's massive chokeslam spelled the end of the match, winning it for her and Kai.

William Regal met Kai and Gonzalez at the top of the ramp to officially crown them champions and award them the Dusty Cup. As mentioned above, the winners now have an opportunity to become Women's Tag Team Champions. No word yet on when exactly the two will face Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler. However, the prospect of a showdown between Gonzalez and Jax is a very exciting one.
