As silly as many fans say it makes him look, there's apparently a very logical reason WWE decided to add a mask and suspenders to Karrion Kross' look on Monday Night. It's not complicated, it's not anything against the wrestler, it's simple business economics, according to WWE.
Kross came out to the ring and beat Ricochet in a matter of seconds. In any other set of circumstances, fans might be saying, 'This is exactly what Kross needs.' Unfortunately, no one can seem to get past the new look, which included a red mask and suspenders that reminded the WWE Universe of the 80's and the tag team Demolition.
Andrew Zarian of the Mat Man Pro Wrestling Podcast reported the change in appearance is simply for marketing and merchandising purposes. In short, WWE wants to sell more merch with Kross' likeness on it.
This might not be the final version of Kross that fans see and there could be more testing done, with small changes here and there, but the idea is that WWE can sell more figures and more merchandise by simply adding different elements to a character they think has an interesting look.
There's good news and bad news here. The bad news is that every time WWE trots Kross out in a terribly hideous outfit, the longer it takes for fans to accept him and he may never rebound. The good news is, this seems to suggest creative and Vince McMahon have invested some time into Kross' character and are working on it. Not every wrestler can say they have McMahon's attention.
Expect More Of This In WWE
Rumors are that WWE is looking to go bigger on the characters and Kross has been used as an example of a talent that may represent this new creative shift. While fans are poking fun, the scary part is that more of the wrestlers employed by WWE could undergo similar makeovers.
Only time will tell if it works and if WWE can create an iconic image for a talent that makes us forget about all the swings and misses.
