Io Shirai immediately shut down a fan on NXT this week who told her to go back to a country she's not even from.

Being a professional wrestler is so much more than just being able to perform between the ropes. As well as being able to actually wrestle, wrestlers also need to have the ability to talk a good game. There are loopholes for stars who don't have the chops on the mic but chances are if they don't have that ability, they won't last long in the business.

Then there's the difference between whether wrestlers need everything to be scripted for them, if they prefer what they say to be off the cuff, or somewhere in between. Even if a wrestler does fall into the "everything scripted" camp, there will always be times when they need to react to something off the cuff, and they'll need to think of something fast.

That something that needs to be reacted to won't always come from a peer. It might come from a fan sitting in the front row, as Io Shirai discovered on NXT this week. Sadly, it appears as if the fan made a racist comment fueled by zero knowledge about the wrestler he or she was trying to disparage.

Although what the fan says can't clearly be heard in the clip, it's believed they told Shirai to "go back to China." Since Shirai is actually from Japan, which she quickly lets the fan know, the racist heckling makes zero sense. Shirai hears the fan, shoots them a look, replies "I'm Japanese, bitch" and seamlessly transitions into the splits while she waits for her opponent. We wish we had even a fraction of the amount of cool Shirai had at that moment.

Perhaps the most shocking part of this whole thing is that some fans have been coming to the defense of the fan who heckled. The supposed defense is that Shirai is a heel and fans have the right to yell things at her. That's true, but when those comments are poorly thought out, racially charged remarks rooted in ignorance, it's not okay. More power to Shirai for reacting the way she did and instantly shutting the fan down.
