Though popular with wrestling fans and those who just love documentaries without even knowing much about the sport, Dark Side of the Ring has had controversy as well, with some saying the show is too negative, and has turned into gotcha journalism, relying on journalists such as Dave Meltzer, who deals in rumor rather than facts. On Something to Wrestle, Bruce Prichard said of the series, "The show itself I think went from a place of an investigative show to a place of a 'Gotcha!' show, and, 'Let's see who we can tear apart, dead or alive with rumor and innuendo." Dark Side of the Ring was created by Evan Husney and George Eisener. Over five seasons and coming up on 50 episodes, they've covered the worst of wrestling's past. Since Season 2, wrestling legend Chris Jericho has been the narrator, with the likes of Dave Meltzer, Jim Cornette, Mick Foley, and Jake "the Snake" Roberts being just a few interviewed over multiple episodes.

The first season of Dark Side of the Ring dealt with issues such as the Montreal Screwjob and the Von Erich curse. Season 2 premiered with a two-part episode about the Chris Benoit tragedy, and the finale took a look at the accidental death of Owen Hart. Season 3 premiered with another two-parter, this time about Brian Pillman, but it was an episode about the infamous plane ride from hell that caused a lot of controversy for its revelations about Ric Flair. This past season covered wrestlers such as Chris Candido, Tammy Sytch, the Junkyard Dog, and Marty Jannetty.
