WWE is really into longer title reigns right now. Like it or not, it seems to be working as in the majority of those cases, the title holder feels like an incredibly big deal. Roman Reigns' 1,000+ days as Undisputed Universal Champion is the best evidence of that, but Gunther's run with the Intercontinental Title is also working wonders. The Ring General surpassed 400 days with the title a couple of weeks ago, and he has now broken yet another record as he marches on.

Macho Man Down, Two More To Go

This past Saturday, Gunther hit 414 days as Intercontinental Champion. As pointed out by Wrestleseeks, that means the Austrian has surpassed Randy Savage to become the third longest-reigning IC Champ of all time. Wrestleseeks has Macho Man's reign at 413 days while WWE lists it as 414. Either way, since it is now Monday, Gunther is currently sitting on 416 days as champion so has moved past it regardless.

That leaves just two men who have enjoyed longer reigns with the Intercontinental Title than Gunther in its more than 40-year history. Pedro Morales was champion for 424 days, one of the few men to have enjoyed massive reigns with both the Intercontinental and World Titles, although his time with the latter was recently surpassed by Reigns. Then you have Honky Tonk Man topping the pile on 453 days.

Only Drew McIntyre Can Stop Him Now

Gunther might well have to settle for a very respectable third place as this Saturday, his reign as Intercontinental Champion faces its toughest challenge yet. Drew McIntyre is back and at SummerSlam, there's a very good chance he stops Gunther's reign at 421 days. Three days short of equalling what Morales managed decades ago, and more than a month away from toppling the Honky Tonk Man to set a record that might well never be beaten.

There's every chance Gunther moves on past McIntyre, of course, at which point it would feel almost nailed on that WWE has plans to make him the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion of all time. A bragging right Honky Tonk Man has milked for more than 30 years, I'm sure there are a few people in WWE who would take pleasure in replacing that record with a much more current one.
