All Elite Wrestling (AEW) has finally cleared up confusion over the AEW World Title situation after CM Punkrelinquished the title stepped away from the company due to an injury. It was first announced by Chris Jericho on commentary that he would relinquish the title. It was then announced that a Battle Royal would take place on Wednesdays Dynamite, with the winner facing Jon Moxley at Forbidden Door for an interim title. The company updated the report to say that Moxley would wrestle that evening. It got a little out of hand trying to keep up.

As such, on Saturday, AEW released a full statement walking through exactly how the interim AEW Champion would be crowned.

First, a Battle Royal will take place to open this week's Dynamite and include many of the top competitors in AEW. The winner of that match will face Moxley in the main event. AEW announced that it would be Moxley, because he's the No. 1 ranked challenger in their rankings system. The winner of that match between Moxley and whoever comes out of the Battle Royal will move on to Forbidden Door to face an undetermined opponent.

That opponent will be one of two people. Hiroshi Tanahashi was scheduled to face CM Punk at Forbidden Door and he'll now be given one of the spots to compete for the right to move on to Forbidden Door. He'll have to wrestle Hirooki Goto first at New Japan Pro Wrestling's Dominion event on June 12th. Once again, whoever wins that match (June 12) moves on to Forbidden Door to face the winner of the Dynamite show (June 8).

CM Punk Will Get A Shot At The Interim Champion

AEW then announced that Punk will hang onto the World Title and defend it against the interim champion when he returns and is medically cleared to compete again. At that time, the two titles will be unified and there will be one AEW World Champion.
