The Rock Has Made Fun Of Himself Over The Photo
This image was taken in 1996, and according to The People’s Champion rocking a fanny pack took a lot of courage as he said, “It takes a lot of confidence to rock a fanny pack. Put your thumb in the fanny pack. I’m giving a look.” During his chat with People, The Rock also talked about having a tissue underneath his elbow because he wanted to protect the turtleneck since it was an expensive purchase for him at that time.
“I’ve got a tissue underneath my elbow because I felt like my turtleneck was expensive. The funniest thing about this picture is, this is not a joke. I walked out of the house like this. Like, hey baby, this is it, right?’"
The Rock Tells All About What Was In The Fanny Pack
Probably the best part about this image was not the turtleneck, but the fanny pack since they were pretty popular back then, and "in the world of pro-wrestling in the '90s, everyone had a fanny pack." A lot of fans wanted to know about the contents inside the fanny pack when The Tonight Show’s host Jimmy Fallon asked this question to The Rock once and his reply was “pop tarts and condoms.” In another interview, he said they also contained “phone numbers” and "a lot of inappropriate things I can't mention right now,” likely referring to contraceptives.

He also wore a watch on his wrist, which he revealed was a fake Tag Heuer watch. There was probably some truth to his “chick magnet” comment as The Brahma Bull was named People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive in 2016, although that probably had more to do with his personality rather than his outfits.
The Rock Recreated This Outfit For SNL In 2017
The Rock recreated this iconic look in 2017 for SNL when he hosted its 42nd season and entered the Five-Timers Club. On an Instagram post about the same, The People’s Champion wrote that this picture was taken in 1996, and just a year before he was “sleeping on a used mattress.” He also jokingly advised everyone to “ALWAYS remember to place a soft tissue under your left elbow as to protect the fabric of the cheap ass swag turtleneck that had you out here looking like a bad ass buff lesbian. Oh and tuck the thumb in the fanny pack. Always tuck the thumb.”
Back in 2020, The Rock also got a float during Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade based on the same turtleneck outfit to promote his Young Rock comedy series. Uli Latukefu also recreated this turtleneck outfit for a Young Rock promo a few years back. A lot of people have also done the same for Halloween, including The Rock's good friend, Kevin Hart.
