After 25 years of the same cut, same look, and same hairstyle, Shawn Michaels has sent the Internet into a frenzy after he chopped off his iconic ponytail. The former WWE Champion and Hall of Famer has gone with the same hairdo for years and while he was going bald, wearing hunting caps and cowboy hats, it's still a shocker that he would remove such a piece of WWE history.

The news has sparked all sorts of hilarious comments on the old Al-Gore. From people saying their childhood is officially dead to others claiming this is a sad moment in wrestling history. Some have asked the WWE Universe for a moment of silence for HBK's ponytail and one Twitter user said, "Ladies and gentlemen, The Heartbreak Kid Shawn Michaels' (hair) has left the building."

Why Michaels chose now to cut his iconic locks is anyone's guess but it has to be assumed the timing has something to do with it being WrestleMania weekend and in the spirit of big changes in WWE.

Evan Dell, the barber who cut Michaels' hair said, "Today I had the honor of meeting a childhood hero of mine Shawn Michaels, and getting him ready for Wrestlemania this weekend. Shawn has had the ponytail for over 20 years, and today he had me cut it off and give him a new look. Such a genuine and down to earth guy it was such a privilege being trusted with the famous locks," he wrote on Facebook.

The link to Dell's Facebook post has since been removed and we can only assume it's due to the unbelievable shock fans everywhere were feeling when seeing their boyhood hero lose his 20-year ponytail.

Michaels is not scheduled to be a part of WrestleMania 34 but he will be on site as an ambassador for WWE and likely backstage for NXT TakeOver: New Orleans as he's one the trainers for NXT after retiring from in-ring competition years ago.

For fans having a hard time coming to grips with this, we can only try to explain it by asking people to envision Hulk Hogan without his beard and terrible mullet-style haircut. It might be bad, but it's beloved by everyone. So was Michaels' ponytail.
