Max Dupri was introduced as a smug and villainous manager, exuding an air of superiority and arrogance that was meant to make him an effective heel. He immediately formed a faction called Maximum Male Models, recruiting wrestlers Mace and Mansoor into his group. The faction's premise centered around a bizarre concept, with the members being more concerned about their appearance and fashion choices rather than winning matches. This gimmick portrayed them as individuals who valued style over substance, a theme that failed to resonate with the WWE audience.
The most significant drawback of this repackaging was the departure from the genuine charisma and magnetism that LA Knight had displayed throughout his NXT run. Following his departure from the Maximum Male Models faction, LA Knight's fortunes did not improve. Reports from PWTorch indicated that Knight had managed to rub people the wrong way backstage, which raised concerns about his standing within the company. This led to WWE Chairman Vince McMahon reportedly wanting Knight off TV entirely, adding further complications to his WWE journey.
However, a twist of fate occurred during this period. Vince McMahon was forced to retire from WWE due to scandalous allegations coming to light against him. In his absence, Triple H took charge, and it was under his leadership that LA Knight was given a lifeline. Triple H, aware of Knight's potential, decided to revert him to his original LA Knight gimmick that fans loved, providing him with a fresh start.

LA Knight Opens Up About The Failed Max Dupri Gimmick
In a recent interview with Daily Mail, LA Knight shed light on the reasoning behind his stint as Max Dupri. He said, “Oh, boy! Hahaha. I’m killing it in NXT. It’s crazy, like, just the reactions, the way I had turned from big-time heel in the summertime to big-time babyface by the winter. It’s not piped in and it’s not prefabbed reactions. It was organic, real stuff happening. I come up for a dark match, I get the attention of the right people, ‘hey, who is this guy?' but then the age thing comes up – [whispers] ‘oh no, he’s 40, danger’. But I’m not the average 40-year-old. I haven’t gone through the ringer. I haven’t had a bunch of surgeries or injuries, knock on that wood. I’ve lived a good, youthful life in a certain sense, and I’ve taken care of myself in a way I would say most don’t.”
He added, “And also, I look a certain way where obviously I’ve got somebody’s attention. But that number came up, and it was like, 'well, ok, maybe we make him a manager.' So some things happened there. It was not my cup of tea, and definitely, I don’t think it was for me. But somehow, there I was. Some things happened that we don’t need to go into, and then eventually, LA Knight was back.”
Fortunately, LA Knight got his gimmick back and now the fans await WWE's next big move with him.
