Kofi Kingston suffered a legitimate injury on Friday during the chaos over the Intercontinental Championship contenders slot. With Drew McIntyre and Sheamus arguing over who should get a shot at Gunther, then LA Knight, New Day, and Karrion Kross getting involved, the melee that resulted left Kingston with an ankle injury that could leave him on the sidelines during a Fatal Five-Way match to determine the top contender for the title.
After rumors that Kingston suffered a real injury during the action, he posted a video on his Twitter page seemingly confirming that he was hurt. It appears he's on vacation, but the video shows his ankle wrapped up. He writes, in the tagline, "We gon’ be alright" with the song of the same name playing in the background, but the expectation here is that Xavier Woods will likely take his spot in the contender's match next week.
It wasn't expected that Kingston would move on and become the No. 1 contender, so in the long run, his injury likely won't affect any storyline plans for Wrestlemania 39. At the same time, it's unfortunate news that Kingston was hurt. You can see in the linked video where Drew McIntyre jumps over the top rope onto what was supposed to be at least three people, but lands solely on Kingston, taking the bigger man's full body weight alone. It was likely here that Kingston got hurt.
Get Well Kofi
It's not clear if New Day is even scheduled to be a part of WrestleMania 39, but the hope is that Kingston is healthy enough that should WWE want to use the tag team, they at least have the option to put them on the card. New Day is still a big part of WWE, but the group has suffered a rash of injuries over the past year. They need to stay healthy for another solid push.
